Chapter 27

“What in the world is going on with you and Sheena?” Kristen yelled in my ear through the telephone. “Answer me, Jewel!”

“I will answer you if you allow me to speak!” I yelled back at her.

“Okay, speak! What’s going on?” she asked, taking her voice down a notch or two, but still quite feisty.

“Obviously Sheena has already called you to tell you what happened. So why do you need to hear the story twice?”

“I need to hear the story again because I can’t believe my two best friends, who have also been friends damn near for life, are beefin’ like this. I’m really calling to hear you say that what Sheena said isn’t true, that you two are still friends.”

“Well, you won’t hear that from me. I don’t mess with Sheena no more.”

“What do mean, you don’t mess with Sheena? Come on, Jewel, we’re family. We’re sisters.”

“Not anymore, we aren’t. I’m done with her.”

“For real, Jewel? Tell me what happened. Maybe this was all a misunderstanding.”

“Nope, it’s not a misunderstanding. But since you want to hear my side of the story, I’ll give it to you short and sweet. Sheena called me to tell me that she doesn’t agree with my relationship with Thad because he’s married and he’s using me. Then she went on to say that he wasn’t gonna leave his wife for me. She referred to our relationship as him just giving me a wet ass. And that’s basically it.”

“Damn! Sheena said that?”

“Yes, Miss Holy Roller did.”

“So what did you say to her? And don’t tell me nothing. I know you, Jewel Winters, so I know you said something back to her.”

“Sure did. I told her to mind her damn business.”

“Jewel!”

“Oh, and that’s not all I said. I told her that if she had a man, then maybe she wouldn’t be so focused on my life.”

“That was a nasty-ass comment, Jewel, and you know it. Sheena’s been your friend through thick and thin. Why did you have to go there?”

“Look, Kris, Sheena wasn’t sparing my feelings, so I didn’t spare hers. Hell, she’s a grown woman. She can take it.”

“Actually, she can’t take it. She was really upset when she called me. On top of worrying about her mother, now she’s on the outs with you.”

“Well, she should have thought about that before she called with her self-righteous attitude, chastising me about my relationship with Thad. I know the relationship is wrong, and I don’t need nobody telling me that every five minutes.”

“Jewel, you know messing with Thad is wrong, don’t you?”

I laughed at her because I knew she was trying to be funny.

“Stop playing, Kris. I just might cuss you out next.”

“Please, hussy! I’m time enough for your ass. You can talk that smack to Sheena and make her cry, but I’ll throw my Prada shoes through your apartment window, shattering it into a million little pieces, then knock on your door, tell you in your face that I did it, get my shoe, and pat my ass at you as I leave out your door, so don’t play with me.
